Flat Battery Help
If your car battery is flat in Torquay or nearby, tell us what happens when you try to start it. That helps us understand what may be needed — a jump start, a battery test, a replacement or a closer look at why it keeps going flat.

A flat battery is one of the most common reasons a car won’t start. It can happen after leaving lights on, after the car has been standing unused, or because the battery is simply getting to the end of its life. Not every flat battery means a replacement — sometimes the first step is finding out why it went flat.
Signs of a flat battery
- No power at all — no lights, no dashboard, nothing when you turn the key
- A clicking sound when you try to start — the starter tries but the battery is too weak
- Dashboard lights come on but dim when you turn the key
- The car was fine yesterday but won’t start this morning
- Central locking works slowly, or not at all
What to tell us
Tell us where the car is, what happens when you try to start it, roughly how old the battery is if you know, and whether the car has been sitting unused. If you’ve recently had electrical work done or left a light on, mention that too.
What may happen next
The right next step might be a jump start, a battery test, a replacement, a mobile visit or roadside help depending on what we find. A jump start can get the car moving, but if the battery keeps going flat it’s worth checking why rather than simply replacing it again.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure whether it’s the battery or something else. Tell us what you know and we’ll help narrow it down.
Is it the battery, alternator or starter motor?
A flat battery isn’t always the whole story. If the car starts after a jump but then fails again after driving, or this keeps happening, there may be a fault elsewhere. Common related issues include:
- Alternator fault — the alternator charges the battery while the engine runs. If it stops working, the battery drains even after a jump start.
- Starter motor fault — a clicking sound often points to a weak battery, but a worn starter can cause similar symptoms.
- Parasitic drain — something drawing power while the car is switched off can flatten the battery overnight or over a few days.
- Battery age — batteries typically last three to five years. An old battery may pass a basic test but fail in the cold or under load.
On older vehicles, damp or corrosion around electrical connections can sometimes contribute to starting or charging problems too, particularly if the car is exposed to coastal weather around Torbay. It’s one possible factor rather than the whole cause.

Safety first
If the car is in a dangerous spot, blocking the road, on a fast road, or there’s any immediate risk to you or anyone nearby, please call the emergency services (999) or roadside assistance first. Your safety matters more than the car.
